The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, commissioned a new digital X-ray machine at the Nausori Health Centre, significantly strengthening diagnostic services for the region.
Valued at over $200,000, the advanced system replaces analogue equipment that had been in use since 1997 and completes the facility’s shift to fully digital imaging. The upgrade removes film-processing delays, allows for faster image capture, and features Artificial Intelligence software to support clinicians in delivering quicker and more accurate diagnoses.
“This is more than just new equipment; it reflects our commitment to providing timely and comprehensive care for the communities of Rewa, Nakasi, Makoi, Korovou, and Naitasiri,” Minister Lalabalavu said.
He noted that improved imaging services closer to home will reduce the need for patients to travel to Suva for routine scans, saving both time and resources while supporting the decentralisation of quality healthcare.
The installation aligns with Government’s broader efforts to modernise patient care nationwide. Nausori serves as a model for a planned national rollout, with similar digital systems expected at 21 key locations, including CWM Hospital, Taveuni, and Sigatoka.
Senior Biomedical Engineer Ratu Seci Takotavuki, who is overseeing the project, confirmed the retirement of manual film processing. The new fleet includes 18 floor- and ceiling-mounted digital units sourced through a public tender from a leading Chinese manufacturer via a local supplier.
He added that the integrated AI software can help detect potential abnormalities, providing valuable support for faster and more reliable diagnoses.
The upgrade is expected to shorten wait times, enhance image quality, and further improve patient care across Fiji’s public health system.
