DISMAC advises

16/12/2010

The Disaster Management Committee (DISMAC) is again advising members of the public to take extra precaution during this cyclone season, which will continue till the end of April next year.

DISMAC’s advice follows the continued wet weather patterns across the country in the past few weeks, which led to some areas experiencing flash flooding.

Last weekend, flooding disrupted traffic flow at the Wailotua flats along the Kings Road.

DISMAC in its recent public advisory reiterated that people should be prepared at all times since most parts of the country experience rainy weather almost every week.

People should also take note that even though the cyclone season in Fiji is from November to April, tropical cyclones have occasionally formed in other months outside this period, especially October, May and even June.

However, the peak period for tropical cyclone occurrence in the region is usually from January to March. It is therefore critical that all communities remain alert and prepared throughout the coming season.

The DISMAC office stated that one to two tropical cyclones were expected to pass through Fiji waters this coming season, with at least one possibly reaching Category 3 or hurricane intensity.

Meanwhile, the Nadi Weather Office reports that afternoon or evening showers are expected in the interior and western parts of the country for the rest of this week.
