Commissioning the newly enhanced office space and accommodation facilities at the Dobuilevu Cane Breeding Station in Ra yesterday, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Hon. Charan Jeath Singh highlighted this initiative as a significant step forward in advancing sugar research in Fiji.
“This station holds a place of immense significance in Fiji's sugar industry as the birthplace of all our sugarcane varieties. Every commercial variety released by the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has originated from this very site,” he said.
Minister Singh noted the tireless efforts of the dedicated team of scientists and technicians who work rigorously from the early hours of the morning until late evening during the crucial April to August flowering season.
"Until now, our team faced the challenge of commuting long distances daily, impacting both time and resources. The newly constructed accommodation facility addresses this issue by providing a comfortable living environment right here at Dobuilevu for the hardworking scientists and technicians,” he said.
Minister Singh said the development demonstrates the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting vital sugar research efforts and ensuring the staff has the necessary resources to continue their exemplary work.
The chief executive officer for SRIF, Dr. Vinesh Kumar will boost their research activities to ensure the research and trials are done accurately on timely manner, and also improve the performance of the scientist while doing research.
“This research station is located in the unique climate condition which sits in the intermediate zone, wet and dry zone. The location is suitable for cross pollination, which is an important activity in research and trial of new cane variety,” he said.
The upgraded infrastructure includes dedicated areas for meetings, new office space, accommodation facilities, storage of essential materials, and improved workspace amenities.
