The prospects and potential for economic well being for Vanua Levu lies in part in the hands of the people.
A group of farmers in Bua are proving that riches can be made with the smart utilisation of resources that are readily available in the division especially land.
The northern division that boasts a variety of resources in the form of bauxite, gold or even aqua culture and agriculture has what it takes to boost the national economy.
The farmers of Nasolo in Bua, operating a dalo farming scheme at Tui Navitilevu Road in Nasolo briefed the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama of the successes the scheme is reaping.
The family farming scheme is projected to rake in $286,000 in a year.
It has also created employment for many village youths.
Commissioner Northern Inia Seruiratu told the Prime Minister that while there maybe things like bauxite mining , the little things like dalo farming had promise for big bucks.
The Tui Navitilevu farming road is being constructed with assistance from dalo proceeds, especially for the Bua dalo farming scheme.
The Prime Minister has also been asked to assist in constructing a bridge, which would help transport produce to the market.
Commodore Bainimarama was also asked to assist to secure overseas markets for the already fledging enterprise.
The Prime Minister has offered, in principle his support in assisting farmers with their project.
Commodore Bainimarama noted that the farming scheme was a good example of the message that Government was continuously endeavoring to impart to the people that is the full use of resources to generate economic activity.
“They need to do something for themselves first before asking what Government could give them in assistance,” he said.
