The National Disaster Management Office is mandated under section 42.11 of the Roadmap for Democracy and Sustainable Socio Economic Development 2009-2014 to coordinate, manage and ensure a contingency plan is in place at all levels.
The round table discussion held in Nadi on disaster management was aimed at achieving critical issues pertaining to the amendment of standard operations procedures, response, evacuation plans of all target groups and vulnerable communities.
The better understanding of roles will ensure better planning, coordination and conduct of future disaster emergency operations.
“Strengthen awareness on relevant clauses of the disaster act and disaster plan, strengthen Nadi district DISMAC and minimise loss, reduce to zero death toll in future disasters,” Act for Peace project manager, Mr Anthony Blake said.
He stressed the need for District Officers to be trained on how to plan, coordinate and mange their own simulation program on an annual basis.
“Communities must be well informed during disaster, in addition partnership between Government and private sector should be strengthened in terms of building national resilience,” Mr Blake said.
“Nadi District was chosen for the exercise because Nadi and Ba were the worst affected by the recent flooding.
“Nadi is the main international gateway for Fiji, it has been a significant contributor towards our economy and most importantly it is the tourist destination in the Pacific.”
