Disaster Office to sign MOU

22/09/2010

The National Disaster Management Office is discussing with Habitat for Humanity a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of housing for rehabilitation.

The MOU, outlines the cyclone devastated areas of Vanua Levu where the Habitat will construct homes.

NDMO Acting Director Pajiliai Dobui says around 48 homes will be built by the Habitat.

“We expect to finalize that MOU today,” he said.

“The homes will be built within Tawake district in Cakaudrove.

“They receive sponsorship from donors and we made the MOU to clearly demarcate the areas they build in and where we will undertake constructions.

“This is to ensure that no one gets two or three houses from the program. We will try and give them as much room to work within and provide whatever assistance we can give them.”

The first phase of rehabilitation started yesterday with housing materials deployed on Government barges Kaiwai and Kusima for Vanua Levu and Northern Lau.

The first phase of rehabilitation will cost $3.3m.

There are two other phases that will be implemented next year with total assistance to average $8m - $9m.
