EARLY START FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS

03/01/2013

TEACHERS from schools around the cyclone-affected areas have been told to return back to their respective schools.

This is to fast track rehabilitation works at schools so that they are ready to open when the new school year begins on January 21, 2013.

Divisional education officer western, Lorima Voravora said the decision was made in Suva and that the head of the ministry made the call following assessments to the schools.

"All teachers have already been told to return to their schools so they can see rehab work being carried out," Mr Voravora said.

"We would like to thank the Australian Government for assistance it has been providing to the rehabilitation and recovery to all schools."

Mr Voravora said all rehabilitation works to minor damages would be complete before the new school year begins, however those schools that have been severely damaged would be ready a week later.

"Our concern right now is also the dormitories when schools open," Mr Voravora said.

"We have provided make shift tents for schools but we will complete work on time so that there is minimal disruptions to the students education."

Republic of Fiji Military Forces engineers, Public Works Department and 29private contractors have the task of making sure schools are ready by January 21.
