The Office of the Prime Minister received two electric vehicles from the People’s Republic of China, specifically gifted by the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Congress at the Office of the Prime Minister today (28.07.25).
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Office was the Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister, Hon. Sakiusa Tubuna, who highlighted China’s significant contributions in harnessing technological innovation to promote environmental protection and combat climate change.
“A prime example of this is the development of electric vehicles, in which China plays an important role within the global market by producing over 70% of all electric vehicles. This achievement reflects China's commitment to sustainable development and its advancements in eco-friendly transportation initiatives.”
“These electric vehicles generally have a positive impact on the environment, as they reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
Hon. Tubuna acknowledged the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Congress for its contributions to supporting Fiji's development, which includes the redevelopment of Albert Park, the refurbishment of the Civic Auditorium, and the athletics track at Marist Brothers High School.
“In addition to other initiatives, it is noteworthy that Guangzhou City has been proactively addressing climate change through the promotion of electric vehicles. We note and acknowledge this principled commitment.
“I am very pleased to accept, today, the generous donation of two electric vehicles to the Office of the Prime Minister. This gesture underscores our mutual commitment to addressing the pressing challenges of climate change while focusing on functional measures to advance collaboration in today’s demanding business environment and innovation in our partnership.”
The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Congress, Mr Wang Yanshi, while handing over the vehicles, reaffirmed China’s dedication to its partnership with Fiji.
He highlighted that China is honoured to contribute to Fiji’s journey towards a greener and more sustainable future and added that these electric vehicles, donated by Guangzhou, symbolise our commitment to deepening our friendship and cooperation, particularly in areas of climate resilience, innovation, and clean technology. Guangzhou City is proud to stand with Fiji in building a cleaner and more prosperous tomorrow.
Furthermore, Mr Yanshi stated the visit is a testament to the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China, established in 1975. This year marks the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic ties—a significant milestone that reflects the enduring friendship and cooperation between our two nations.
