The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations has responded to claims made by the Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) regarding the conduct of Labour Officers during recent workplace inspections.
Minister for Employment, Hon. Agni Deo Singh, confirmed that the Ministry carried out an internal investigation and found the inspections were conducted in full compliance with the law and standard operating procedures.
“A normal routine inspection was conducted by two of our labour officers, and three other workplaces in the same premises were also inspected. The allegation that a single employer was targeted is incorrect,” said Minister Singh.
He clarified that officers had inquired about the nature of the business, not about any “video” as alleged, and that the inspection report revealed clear breaches of the Employment Relations Act 2007:
; Section 45 – Failure to maintain wages and time records
; Section 44 – Failure to provide wage statements to workers
“These are not minor oversights — they are core legal obligations designed to protect workers’ rights and ensure transparency,” the Minister said.
He added that the Ministry issues a 30-day notice for rectification in such cases and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure compliance.
The Ministry also highlighted the timing of these allegations, noting their coincidence with ongoing parliamentary consultations on the Employment Relations (Amendment) Bill, and urged all stakeholders to engage in constructive, fact-based dialogue through the proper channels.
“We stand by our officers who uphold the law and protect workers’ rights. At the same time, we welcome open dialogue with all employers to strengthen compliance and fairness in the workplace,” Minister Singh said.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting harmony, productivity, and justice across all Fijian workplaces.
