EPLOYMENT MINISTER APPLAUDS DRASA VOCATIONAL STUDENTS AS FIJI REBUILDS SKILLS FOR A STRONGER TOMORROW

30/11/2025

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Hon. Agni Deo Singh, this evening (29/11) officiated at the Drasa Vocational Awards Night, commending students, parents, and the Drasa community for their dedication to education, skills development, and nation-building.

Speaking at the event, Minister Singh said he was deeply encouraged by the remarkable progress made by the institution since his last visit.

“Tonight reflects not only the achievements of our students, but also the strength of a community that believes in the power of education."

"I have seen significant improvements in the infrastructure and learning environment here at Drasa. This transformation is a testament to the commitment of teachers, school leaders, and parents.”

Minister Singh emphasised that the Government has allocated its largest-ever budget to the education sector, ensuring that students, both academic and vocational are provided every opportunity to succeed.

“Our scholarship programs are now fully merit-based. We want every young Fijian to know that hard work and dedication will be recognised and rewarded.”

He highlighted the Government’s priority to rebuild Fiji’s technical and vocational capabilities following the closure of many institutions a few years back.

“We have reopened technical colleges and vocational centres because Fiji needs skilled tradespeople. To support this, our National Apprentice Scheme now provides wage top-ups, where the Government pays a top up of $2.00 to the apprentice’s wage. This makes it easier for employers to take on trainees and helps young people transition into meaningful careers.”

Addressing the graduating students, Minister Singh encouraged them to engage with the National Employment Centre (NEC) for job registration and attachment opportunities.

“Our job attachment programme, under which the Government and employers share wage responsibilities, gives graduates a stronger pathway to secure long-term employment. We want to ensure that no young person is left behind.”

He also reminded parents of their vital role in preparing the next generation, not only academically, but morally.

“Your guidance in discipline, respect, and values is essential. Schools can educate, but families build character.”

The Minister acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the community, faith-based organisations, and civil groups in supporting schools like Drasa.

He reaffirmed the Government's commitment to protecting young people, urging students to stay away from harmful activities such as drug use and to uphold the values of hard work and integrity.

“Our young people must be nurtured in safe, supportive environments."

The Minister congratulated all award recipients and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.
