EQUIPMENT BOOSTS DIVISIONAL EMERGENCY OPERATION CENTRES

11/12/2013

The minimal presence of equipment by the four Divisional Emergency Operation Centres (DEOC) has prompted the National Disaster Management Office to relocate certain equipment to these centres to respond effectively to any disaster.

Commissioner Central, Laisenia Tuitubou said the equipment will provide a better link to the people in returning the situation to normalcy.

One such equipment is two 2 X100 KVA diesel generators (West and North) which will automatically switch on without disrupting work at the operation centre.

“The generators will allow for continuity of services, especially in the dissemination of information to the public,” Mr Tuitubou added.

Other equipment that will be distributed to the DEOC include 13 diesel generators, seven 5000 litres water tanks, four rescue aluminium boats with engines including life jackets, four 40ft storage containers, which can also be used as mobile emergency operation centres and two tents per DEOC.

“The equipment will assist the EOC in responding to the needs of the public. This will also lessen the impact of any natural hazard and at the same time, reduce the risk on lives and properties as well,” Mr Tuitubou added.

In addition, the DISMAC office has also been conducting training and awareness in various communities to assist them better respond to natural hazards.

Government purchased the equipment at a cost of $500,000.
