EVACUATION CENTRES OPEN IN THE WEST

25/01/2012

The National Disaster Management Office has activated four evacuation centres in the Western Division.

These evacuation centres will provide temporary relief because of flash flood experienced in certain areas of the division, which has left many stranded.

The following centres are open to members of the public, whose homes have been flooded or washed away;

-      St Andrews Primary School, Nadi
Contact District Officer Ph: 6700101/6700143
-      St Teresa Primary School
Contact District Officer Ph: 6674056
Cell: 8776708
-      Rakiraki Muslim College
-      Vaileka Methodist Church Hall, Rakiraki

And for the Northern Division, no official evacuation centre has been activated because community halls were used initially and people returned home when floodwaters receded.

However, the District Officer has cautioned the public to refrain from using the river for bathing.

The DO’s office said it had noticed people living near rivers trying to take a bath in the receding waters and this must cease because one person had already lost his life in the North.

Weatherwise, the situation in the North is becoming normal.

In Macuata the district emergency operation centre has been activated and the National Fire Authority is assisting in the monitoring of flooding in the low-lying areas.

A Dalip Chand bus that left Labasa at in this morning for Savusavu via Wainikoro route is stranded at Daku Bhartiya School in Daku.

Manager operations Mr Ambika confirmed the company would provide passengers’ meals.

Teachers and nearby community have volunteered to provide accommodation to passengers and the bus will leave tomorrow if the weather permits.

Patterson Brothers passengers that were stranded at Batiri Village have reached Labasa after the clearance of landslide [single lane] by the road supervisor and villagers.
