The Minister for Education, Filipe Bole says declining examination results recorded at the Holy Family Secondary School in Labasa in the past few years is of grave concern to him.
On a tour of Vanua Levu schools, Mr Bole visited students and teachers of Holy Family Secondary School.
The minister, who is accompanied by a team of senior education officers, met and talked to teachers and students about ways to improve examination results.
In a short briefing with the teachers, he challenged them with some new strategies to be implemented.
“I am not satisfied with the results,” Mr Bole said.
“The school is good, the management is good and the facilities are good but teachers need to work hard in order to move out of the underperforming category.”
In highlighting methods of improving academic achievements, Mr Bole instructed teachers to plan their work properly.
“Teachers can’t walk into a class without plans. Heads of departments should check and sign teachers’ workbooks every week. Work should be planned at least a week in advance,” he added.
Mr Bole also advised teachers to carry out their remedial work thoroughly.
“Students need to be reminded with concepts they have covered before the examination,” Mr Bole said.
“Excellent examination results will bring happiness. Teachers will be happy, students will be happy and parents will also be happy,” the Education Minister said.
