Education Ministry begins secondary teacher training course (STTC)

25/11/2009

The Ministry of Education, under its Secondary Teacher Training Course (STTC), will train 120 teachers to become qualified secondary school teachers beginning from Monday, November 30, 2009.

These teachers, who hold tertiary qualifications, are already teaching in the classroom. However they are yet to undergo training in the teaching and learning process.

The training is part of the Ministry’s strategies to ensure that teachers who were recruited to replace retirees, are trained to become qualified teachers.

Altogether, 5 subject combinations will be offered and teachers are expected to enrol in their respective subject disciplines. These are Maths/Physics; Bio/Chemistry; Accounting/Economics English, History, Geography & Social Science and possibly TVET.

The course will be held at the Fiji College of Advanced Education (FCAE) with most tutors and part-time lecturers from FCAE and a few from other institutions.

The training will run throughout this holiday period and will continue during the school breaks in 2010.

The teachers are expected to graduate at the end of 2010.

Minister for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts, Youth and Sports, Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment, Mr Filipe Bole.
