Education is an escape from poverty

26/02/2010

The Minister for Education Mr Filipe Bole told students in three secondary schools on Wednesday 24th February 2010 that education would end the poverty cycle.

This is why Government is investing on education by seeing that as from 2010, children are to remain in school for 12 years.

The policy is strengthened by the abolition of examinations such as FIE, FEYE, and FJCE. The idea would eradicate school dropout problems, Mr Bole said.

Furthermore, Government is assisting parents by bearing some of the education costs in textbooks, bus fares and tuition fees.

He said all parents need to do now is to ensure that children are well fed, properly dressed and encouraged to pursue education to the best of their abilities.

The Minister made the statements while speaking to students of Nakasi High, Rewa Secondary, and Pt Shreedhar Maharaj College.

Mr Bole has started visiting schools that need encouragement to improve their examination results.

While talking to students, the Minister said this year will be the final year for the Fiji Junior Certificate Examination. Students are encouraged to make a memorable parting by scoring high marks and hundred percent pass.

The management and parents of the three schools visited joined the teachers and students to meet the Minister.

In Pt Shreedhar College, the Minister was told that his visit was the first time ever for the school.
