Education minister to visit Northern schools

19/03/2010

The devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Tomas, has undeniably brought trauma and despair to our fellow citizens, our relatives, our friends and loved ones in the Northern and Eastern Division. Lest we forget, our students, who are trying to come to grips with the tragic ordeal.

The Education Ministry fully sympathizes with students and their families, who unfortunately faced the dreadful impact of TC Tomas in the past few days.

Now, restoring education and health services are Government’s priority.

In that regard, 4 groups of education officers are surveying schools in Cakaudrove while 3 groups are in Macuata and Bua. Their report, which is expected to be received at Headquarters by today, Friday 19 March, should provide a comprehensive analysis of damage to schools’ infrastructure and facilities.

Estimated cost of damages will also be included.

Based on that report, the Minister will be in the North on Tuesday and Wednesday, next week to provide assistance to these schools. This would be in the form of grants and additional ones to expedite the rehabilitation process.

The Minister will be accompanied by the Deputy Secretary- Primary/Secondary Education, Dr Brij Lal and Education Officers from the Northern Division.

Minister for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts, Youth and Sports, Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment, Mr Filipe Bole
