A Government delegation was at Ucunivanua Village, Verata, Tailevu, to present their reguregu (condolences) to the family and people of the late ‘Na Gone Turaga Na Ratu,’ Na Taukei Burelevu o Naisanokonoko Ratu Ilisoni Qionibaravi Ravoka.
The late chief was not only a revered leader of his people but also a steadfast supporter of the reinstatement of the Great Council of Chiefs.
The customary reguregu, by the Government delegation, led by Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works and Meteorological Services, conveyed the Government’s heartfelt sympathies to a chief whose vision and commitment to the betterment of his people.Following the reguregu, a church service was held at the village church, where mourners gathered to pay their last respects. The funeral service was not only a farewell but was also a celebration of a life devoted to service and the preservation of tradition.
The late chief was laid to rest at the Sautabu (chiefly burial site).
Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka reflected on the late chief's enduring legacy, describing him as a pillar of strength for his people. The late chief's unwavering commitment to upholding traditional values.
The late ‘Turaga na Ratu’ strongly supported the reformation of the Great Council of Chiefs, which was a testament to his vision for a unified Fiji.Also in attendance at the reguregu and the funeral service was the Vice Chairperson of the GCC, ‘Na Momo na Taukei Navo’ Ratu Meli Saukuru.
Government ministers present included Hon. Ifereimi Vasu, Minister for iTaukei Affairs, and Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development. Senior government officials were also present with representatives from statutory organisations.
The passing of the late ‘Turaga na Ratu’ marks the end of an era for the Vanua o Verata, but his spirit and influence will forever remain.
