FFNPT SECRETARIAT PRESIDENT ACKNOWLEDGES FIJI'S COMMITMENT

The President of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FFNPT) Secretariat, Mr. Kumi Naidoo, met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Biman Prasad, and the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua, during his official trip to Fiji.

The meeting highlighted Fiji's active role in the global push for climate action, with both DPM Prasad and Hon. Qereqeretabua reaffirming the government's commitment to addressing climate change and transitioning to renewable energy.

Mr. Naidoo, accompanied by Mr. Jacob Netzler, the Initiative’s Pacific Campaigns Associate, discussed the progress of the FFNPT campaign currently being led by 11 Pacific governments and explored opportunities for future collaboration. 

He expressed his gratitude to the Government of Fiji for its continued support and engagement in high-level forums, particularly those hosted by the Secretariat at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Hon. Prasad and Hon. Qereqeretabua acknowledged the importance of continued collaboration with global partners in advancing Fiji’s climate agenda and strengthening its leadership in climate diplomacy.
Mr. Naidoo acknowledged Fiji's strong advocacy and support, emphasising the country's importance in the global movement towards phasing out fossil fuels. He also outlined the ongoing efforts of the FFNPT Initiative to ensure a just and equitable energy transition.

Fiji is a founding member of the now 16 nations advancing the call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to begin the just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels. 

The visit underscored the Blue Pacific’s climate leadership and shared commitment to creating sustainable, long-term solutions for climate challenges facing the Pacific region and beyond.
