FIJI, KAZAKHSTAN SIGN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

The Republic of Fiji and the Republic of Kazakhstan formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Kazakhstan Mission to the United Nations in New York today.

Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson and his Kazakhstani counterpart Ambassador Byrganym Aitimova signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The communiqué expresses the desire of both countries to promote mutual understanding and to strengthen friendship and cooperation among their two peoples.

It affirms that the relationship will be guided by the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and other norms of international law, particularly those pertaining to the promotion of international peace and security, equality among States, territorial integrity, and non-interference in the internal affairs of other States.

Following the signing of the communiqué, the Ambassadors discussed the strengthening of relations between the two nations.

Ambassador Aitimova paid tribute to Fiji’s long service to the international community in the form of UN Peacekeeping.

Ambassador Thomson gave assurances of close cooperation in their common membership of the Asia-Pacific Group and other organs of the United Nations.
