Fiji and the European Union (EU) convened their 2nd Partnership Dialogue in Brussels, Belgium which was co-chaired by the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua and Ambassador Martin Bille Hermann, Managing Director for Multilateral Affairs in the European External Action Service (EEAS).
At the Dialogue, the EU and Fiji took stock of bilateral cooperation since the last Partnership Dialogue meeting in Fiji in 2024. Both parties emphasised the importance of ensuring that multilateralism is effective and inclusive in addressing challenges related to climate change, economic uncertainties, and respective regional security.
Both parties reflected on the success of the first EU-Pacific Business Forum held in Fiji in September 2025, and the opportunities for increased trade and investment with the EU.
Fiji updated its progress on implementation of the Samoa Agreement and the way forward. Both Parties discussed development cooperation for 2021-2027 under the Global Europe Instrument (NDICI) and the implementation of Global Gateway in the Pacific region.
The EU and Fiji discussed the current state of the interim Economic Partnership Agreement (iEPA) implementation and the potential that it offers for Fiji and other Pacific States to increase the level of trade and investment with the EU.
The Dialogue reflected on the importance that the EU and Fiji attach to their shared values, including the rule of law, democracy, and human rights. Climate Change, Environment and Ocean governance and security, also featured as part of discussions, with Fiji Mission in Geneva Chargé d’Affairs Ms. Keleni Seruvatu providing Fiji’s intervention and updates.
In her concluding remarks, Hon. Qereqeretabua re-emphasised the significance of EU-Fiji relations and Fiji’s commitment to progress issues of mutual priority.
