05/03/2012

Tailevu North College was the centre of Fiji’s World Book Day celebration this week.

The celebration of authors, illustrators, publishers and books are globally recognised and organised annually by UNESCO.

The main aim for this year’s celebration is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of reading books.

USP lecturer Mr Paul Gereghty emphasised to guests and students at the event that one of the advantages of reading is increasing knowledge in languages in particular, the English language.

Books from around the world have tremendously opened up eyes to many other cultures in different countries and also how other people live their lives.

11 primary and 1 Secondary schools in Tailevu North participated in the celebration with colorful items displayed on drama, play and speeches.

More than five hundred students, parents and teachers took part at the event in Tailevu North College. Eleven other primary schools in Tailevu north took part in the celebrations held yesterday.

The theme used this year to celebrate this annual event is“ A book is a garden carried in the pocket”.
