Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Biman Prasad met with World Bank Executive Director South East Asia, Mr. Wempi Saputra to advance Fiji’s development agenda and regional priorities within the World Bank Group’s strategic initiatives.
The discussion focused on the focus of World Bank on the job creation agenda, financing of energy projects and climate action. Fiji supports these efforts, recognising their global impact, while emphasising the urgent need for tailored solutions for Pacific small island states.
DPM Prasad highlighted Fiji’s commitment to sustainable development and called for increased concessional loans and grants to help Pacific nations overcome economic and climate challenges. Fiji is particularly invested in the World Bank’s Small States Strategy, which aims to mobilise private capital in sectors like energy, tourism, and health—key drivers of Fiji’s economic growth.
He also stressed the importance of digital innovation and climate resilience for Fiji’s future, urging stronger support for AI development and regional cooperation. Fiji continues to advocate for a balanced global governance system amid unresolved World Bank shareholding issues, ensuring Pacific voices are heard.
