In a significant move to empower rural and maritime communities, the Government of Fiji has provided vital support to the Najia Fisherman Cooperative on Viwa Island, in the Yasawa Group through the official handover of two six-foot solar freezers yesterday. The event, led by Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Hon. Alitia Bainivalu, highlights the government's ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable fishing practices and improving the livelihoods of local fishers.
Valued at $19,000, the solar freezers are a crucial resource for the 12 registered fishermen of the cooperative. These environmentally friendly devices will enable fishers to store their catch properly, maintaining high quality and reducing post-harvest losses. This, in turn, opens doors to better market opportunities, increased income, and the strengthening of the cooperative’s resilience against economic fluctuations.
Minister Bainivalu emphasised that this initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader development goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 14—Life Below Water—aimed at conserving marine resources for future generations. By introducing cost-effective, renewable technology, the government is not only supporting sustainable fisheries but also promoting environmentally responsible practices that protect Fiji’s precious marine ecosystems.
The handover also serves as a call for unity and responsible management among community members. The Hon. Minister encouraged cooperative members to utilize the freezers effectively, maintain them well, and work collaboratively to maximize their benefits for years to come.
This assistance, though modest in scope, represents a vital step toward inclusive growth and sustainable development. It exemplifies the government’s dedication to uplifting rural communities, ensuring food security, and fostering a thriving Blue Economy. As Hon. Bainivalu concluded, the solar freezers are more than just equipment—they are a symbol of hope and progress on the path to greater prosperity and environmental stewardship for Fiji’s fishing communities.
The donation marks a small but meaningful step toward enhancing the livelihoods of Fiji’s fishing communities, supporting sustainable fisheries, and fostering inclusive growth. The Fiji Government’s continued efforts aim to uplift local communities, promote environmental conservation, and strengthen resilience across Fiji’s maritime sectors.
