FIJI NAP WORKPLACE CONSULTATIONS IN THE NORTHERN DIVISION

26/11/2021

The Fiji National Action Plan To Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls (NAP) successfully carried out its first consultation with the Workplace setting in Labasa today.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Rosy Akbar opened the Workplace consultation, which is the first ever northern based in-person consultation since the beginning of the #FijiNAP consultations.

More than 20 participants from various departments of the MWCPA Labasa office and the Fiji Police Force participated in the consultation.

The participants further strengthened their understanding of the root causes of Violence against women and girls

The first ever northern based in-person consultation also marked the launching of the 16 days of activism against gender based violence campaign by the Hon. Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar. The consultation also coincided with the one year anniversary since the roll out of the #FijiNAP consultation process.

The goal of the national consultations is to build a shared understanding as a nation on why violence against women and girls happens in Fiji; its root causes and contributing factors; and to ensure that the NAP is informed by experience, knowledge and expertise that exists among diverse settings, sectors, and communities in Fiji to prevent and respond to violence against ALL women and girls.

The consultation proved to be a valuable opportunity for the participants to further build their understanding on the root cause of violence against women and girls. The discussion also included the key strategies to prevent VAWG such as promoting respectful relationships between women and men, girls and boys.

Participants of the #FijiNAP workplace setting consultation were also tasked in identifying various strategies to help prevent violence in the work place and what sort of resources would be required to implement those strategies.

The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation appreciates the assistance by Fiji Women Crisis Centre and UN Women in facilitating the consultation.

Appreciation is also extended to the technical working group members that carry out the development of the NAP and will be facilitating more consultations during the 16 days of Activism campaign.

We also acknowledge the technical support provided by UN Women through the Pacific Partnership to End Violence Against Women and Girls, funded primarily by the European Union, and the Governments of Australia and New Zealand.
