FIJI NATIONAL SECURITY AND DEFENSE REPORT LAUNCHED

22/10/2024

The Fiji National Security and Defense Report (NSDR) highlights the need for significant reform with our security institutions.

This was highlighted by Minister for Home Affairs & Immigration, Hon. Pio Tikoduadua at the official launch of the Fiji National Security and Defence Report document at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva today. (22.10.24)

The Minister said trust in our security agencies both in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force must be restored and strengthened.

“Outlined in the report, accountability, transparency, and civilian oversight are paramount.”

Hon. Tikoduadua noted the NSDR is not just another report but a strategic vision that will help Fiji navigate the many complex challenges that threaten our sovereignty and stability.

Hon. Tikoduadua added the NSDR lays the foundation for a people-centred security approach that prioritizes the safety, values, and dignity of every Fijian.

He said at the heart of this approach is a clear understanding that security is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of justice, human rights, social cohesion, and economic stability.

“This report emphasises that a secure Fiji is one where its people are empowered, and where the most vulnerable are protected.”

“One of the critical elements in this review is the call for a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to security.”

He added in this framework, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force play vital roles but must work alongside other government agencies, civil society, and the private sector.

Concluding his remarks, the Hon. Tikoduadua acknowledged the commitment to mainstreaming human rights gender equity, and social inclusion into our national security framework.

“A secure Fiji is one where no one is left behind, where every Fijian has the opportunity to thrive in peace and dignity. This is at the core of the recommendations put forward by the NSDR.”
