Fiji has become the 158th country to ratify the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
Fiji’s Instrument of Ratification of the Convention was deposited at the Treaty Section of the United Nations in New York today by Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson.
The Convention was adopted and opened for signature and ratification by a UN General Assembly resolution in 1984.
After gaining sufficient Member State signatures, the Convention entered into force on 26 June, 1987.
