In a landmark achievement for Fiji and Vanuatu relations, Fiji has been allocated land by the Vanuatu Government to establish a Diplomatic Chancery in Port Vila – signifying a milestone in strengthen Pacific’s solidarity and cooperation.
At a ceremony held earlier this week at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Suva, the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Lenora Qereqeretabua, received the land-lease documents from Her Excellency Mrs Viranria Brown, High Commissioner of Vanuatu to Fiji – reaffirming Vanuatu’s commitment to deepening diplomatic ties with Fiji.
On behalf of the Government and the people of Fiji, Hon. Qereqeretabua conveyed heartfelt appreciation to the Government and the people of Vanuatu for the enduring friendship and strengthened cooperation. The Assistant Minister and the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr Raijeli Taga also welcomed a Vanuatu delegation visiting Fiji this week with aim to exploring joint opportunities in trade, investment, labour mobility, agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure, amongst others.
This development complements recent diplomatic expansions, including the establishment of Vanuatu and Solomon Islands’ chanceries in Suva, launched during the 23rd Melanesian Spearhead Group Leaders Summit in June.
Importantly, the initiative follows the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on development cooperation between Fiji’s Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka and Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Honourable Jotham Napat at the margins of the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara, in September this year.
