FIJI TAKES OVER MSG CHAIRMANSHIP, HOSTS 23rd MELANESIAN SPEARHEAD GROUP LEADERS’ SUMMIT

23/06/2025

The Republic of Fiji is honoured to host the 23rd Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Leaders’ Summit at the historic Great Council of Chiefs Complex, marking a significant occasion for regional unity and cooperation as Fiji assumes the Chairmanship of the MSG from the Republic of Vanuatu.

In his official address, Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his gratitude for this leadership responsibility.

“It is indeed an honour and a privilege to be able to host the 23rd Melanesian Spearhead Group Leaders’ Summit and to be given this special responsibility to lead our Melanesian bloc.”

Prime Minister Rabuka extended heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau Napat and the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu for their stewardship of the MSG since 2022, acknowledging their achievements during challenging times, including the recent 7.3 magnitude earthquake that impacted the nation late last year.

“I especially acknowledge their leadership despite the challenges faced. I am encouraged that in the face of such adversity, the true Melanesian spirit of resilience and perseverance was demonstrated as our sub-region came together to assist and show support. We continue to stand by the people and Government of Vanuatu in their recovery.”

As Fiji takes on the mantle of leadership, Prime Minister Rabuka affirmed the nation's commitment to building on the progress made under Vanuatu’s chairmanship:

“We build on the hard work and success that have been laid before us. It is not a responsibility we take lightly, especially as we are confronted with an increasingly fragmented global landscape that demands more of us.”

Stating the importance of solidarity, Prime Minister Rabuka urged the Melanesian nations to remain united in these circumstances, only reaffirming the need for us to remain united, to stand together in solidarity and in our shared hope for a peaceful and prosperous Melanesia.

He concluded by reaffirming Fiji’s readiness to work closely with fellow MSG members to elevate Melanesia as a beacon of opportunity and collective strength:

“I look forward to working closely with all MSG leaders towards advancing Melanesia as the region of opportunity.”

Outgoing Chair and Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Hon. Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau Napat, described the transition as both symbolic and historic, noting that it was under Prime Minister Rabuka’s leadership in 1997 that Fiji joined the MSG.

“And now, like a seasoned captain returning to the helm, you take the wheel once more. As I relinquish the Chair, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and a spirit emboldened by our shared accomplishments. Let this handover not be an end but a renewal — a reaffirmation of our solemn duty to our peoples, our cultures, and our future.”

“It is therefore with full confidence, deep admiration, and fraternal joy that I now extend the gavel of Chairmanship to the Republic of Fiji — a nation whose leadership history within our region is as rich as its contributions are enduring.”

Prime Minister Napat further highlighted the significance of Prime Minister Rabuka’s return to this esteemed role; it is not merely a matter of protocol. It is a profound full circle in the narrative of regional diplomacy. You led Fiji into the MSG nearly three decades ago; today, you return to lead it with experience burnished by time and a spirit undimmed by age.

“We pass on not just a position — we pass on a legacy. A legacy rooted in solidarity, inclusivity, and shared destiny. It is now Fiji’s moment to carry that torch forward, to illuminate new paths, and to continue writing the story of Melanesian empowerment.”

Also present at the ceremony were:

· Hon. James Marape, Prime Minister of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea

· Hon. Jeremiah Manele, Prime Minister of Solomon Islands

· Mr. Roch Wamytan, FLNKS Representative and former President of the Congress of New Caledonia

· Vice Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Mr. Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir

The handover ceremony was conducted in traditional Melanesian style.

The 23rd MSG Leaders’ Summit brings together Heads of Government and representatives from Fiji, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and the FLNKS of New Caledonia in a shared commitment to strengthen regional collaboration, security, and development across Melanesia.
