This morning, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, held a meeting with the US Ambassador to Fiji, H.E. Marie C. Damour.

During the meeting, Ambassador Damour briefed the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister on the details surrounding Fiji’s recent selection by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Board.

The discussion focused on the broad processes and requirements that will now take effect following Fiji’s selection. These include MCC’s close collaboration with the Fijian Government to implement the compact. The goal is to ensure that the project aligns with Fiji’s development priorities and has a measurable impact on economic growth and poverty reduction.

Ambassador Damour emphasised MCC’s eagerness to engage with the Fijian Government and expressed confidence that Fiji is well positioned to meet the necessary requirements for the chosen project. Hon. Minister Prasad expressed his sincere gratitude to Ambassador Damour for her efforts in coordinating this investment opportunity. He also assured full support from the Fijian Government at all levels during the negotiation phase as well as the implementation stage.

Additionally, Ambassador Damour highlighted that MCC investment projects are solely grant-based. These projects can support large-scale infrastructure developments alongside strategic and regulatory reforms, tailored to Fiji’s specific development needs. Consistent with MCC’s approach in other countries, the initiative will establish a local mechanism or entity comprising representatives from all relevant stakeholders to ensure strong buy-in and effective implementation.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is an independent US government agency dedicated to promoting just and democratic governance, economic freedom, and investing in the populations of partner countries.
