The Fiji Volunteer Scheme (FVS) is developing a program that will soon provide greater opportunities for youth to get involved in areas of topical interest.
Public Service permanent secretary, Parmesh Chand said the scheme is an initiative by government to reform the management of employment creation services in Fiji and will soon be diversified to involve more young people who can contribute towards national development.
“Fiji Volunteer Scheme is going on very well and there are so many youth out there who can contribute under the scheme towards national development,” Mr Chand said.
“It is meant to introduce young people to opportunities to create a sense of national pride and a stepping stone into the workforce as well as sustainable livelihood.”
Mr Chand highlighted that the FVS has largely attracted retired teachers in the regional countries.
“The demand is from the Pacific Island Countries seeking experienced teachers from Fiji to help with their education sector and Pacific needs.
“We are happy to help them and we have had teachers in Marshall Islands, Nauru, Vanuatu and another group now due to go to Tuvalu in the next few weeks,” Mr Chand added.
The FVS has a budgetary allocation of $1million this year.
