FIJI WORKS WITH ITS DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS FOR THE SAFE REOPENING OF BORDERS

Fiji is working closely with its development partners both locally and internationally, to prepare for safe reopening of borders and ultimately advance collaboration for a resilient and inclusive economic recovery.
 
This message was conveyed today at a virtual meeting convened by the Permanent Secretary Office of the Prime Minister, Sugar Industry and Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Yogesh Karan with Fiji’s Honorary Consuls in the United States of America and Canada.
 
The briefing provided an opportunity for Fiji to take stock of current areas of collaboration while exploring avenues for enhanced partnerships with USA and Canada, as Fiji prepares to reopen its borders next month.
 
Mr. Karan outlined the consolidated efforts taken by Fiji to ensure implementation of protocols during safe reopening and revival of Fiji’s tourism industry.
 
He said Fiji is grateful to its development partners for their tremendous support, enabling Fiji to prepare for the reopening of borders and with increased collaboration, Fiji aims to maximise opportunities for investment, trade and tourism.
 
In acknowledging Fiji’s cordial relations with United States and Canada, Mr. Karan said there are on-going discussions between the Governments of USA and Canada to deepen the levels of engagements in economic and political cooperation.
 
Mr. Karan acknowledged Fiji’s Honorary Consuls for their effort and timely assistance in reaching out to support Fiji’s response during times of natural disasters and COVID-19 pandemic.
 
On behalf of the Prime Minister, he extended Fiji’s appreciation to the Honorary Consuls, all the stakeholders and the Fijian diaspora in US, Canada, including all those around the world for their commitment and service to Fiji.
 
Mr. Karan said Fiji is grateful for the generosity and solidarity demonstrated by the Fijian diaspora and Honorary Consuls in mobilising collective support and commitment to help Fiji build back better through stronger cooperation.   
 
In response, Fiji’s Honorary Consuls thanked Mr. Karan for the comprehensive discussions and reaffirmed their support for the Fijian Government’s work in rebuilding the economy, particularly in the tourism and investment sectors.
