FIJIAN GOVERNMENT TO CELEBRATE DELANA’S WIN

The Fijian Government will recognise Iliesa Delana’s gold medal win at the 2012 Paralympic games in London with an official celebration planned at Albert Park this Thursday (13th September)

 

Mr Delana, Fiji’s lone participant to the games won gold in the high jump F42 category with a jump of 1.74 meters, setting a new Oceania record in the process and becoming the first athlete ever in Fiji and the Pacific to win a gold medal in the Paralympics Games.

 

Ministry of Information permanent secretary, Ms Sharon Smith Johns said  Delana’s win is a testimony to all Fijians and the nation about commitment, dedication and perseverance of an individual who has brought glory to the nation.

 

Minister for Youth and Sports, Commander Viliame  Naupoto, will  officially welcome Iliesa Delana at Nadi International Airport when he arrives into the country on Wednesday this week.

 

The government is currently finalizing the logistics of a parade through the streets of Suva on Thursday from the Flea Market to Albert Park.

 

At the parade, Mr Delana will be accompanied by members of the Fiji Sporting fraternity, schools from around the Suva area including children from the physically challenged schools, who will be led by the Fiji Police and National Youth Band.

 

At Albert Park, there will be a big celebration to honour Mr Delana and his family.

 

Ms Smith Johns has encouraged members of the public to come out in numbers and join in the   celebrations.

 

“This is a great opportunity for us all to get together and welcome our sporting hero.”

 

A final programme will be released once approved by Cabinet at tomorrow’s meeting.
