THE Fiji soccer team that qualified for the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup was commended by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama for gaining international recognition.
The team met this afternoon with the Prime Minister in his office where he also commended them for acting as sports ambassadors for Fiji.
This is the first time in the nation’s football history that a Fijian team has qualified for the FIFA World Cup.
“We gave the players $500 each to thank them for the win and for having Fiji recognised in soccer not only in the region, but internationally as well,” the Prime Minister said.
Fiji Football Association (FFA) official Rajesh Patel said this was the first time they received funds apart from the the assistance provided by the Fiji Sports Commission.
“It is through your leadership that we have received this funding and the Sports Commission whom we have asked for further funding to prepare for next year,” Mr Patel said.
Antonio Tuivuna, the nephew of famous Ba goalkeeper Laisenia Tuba, said it was a proud moment for them to help Fiji qualify for the World Cup.
“This is my passion; I want to continue playing soccer professionally so I am proud to be part of the team that helped Fiji qualify for the World Cup,” he said.
The Ravinesh Kumar-coached side won the Oceania qualifying series held at the ANZ National Stadium.
The team was also provided $65,000 by the Fiji Football Association to be shared amongst the players and officials.
