The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is in the process of compiling a final report of the damage sustained and will be submitted to donors for funding to allow for the immediate commencement of rehabilitation work.

This was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary for Provincial development and Disaster Management Lieutenant Colonel Inia Seruiratu.

“Priority areas are education, health, agricultural and public utilities and the focus now is on the current adverse weather situation encountered through over Fiji Group,” he said.

“The fumigation exercise conducted by the Ministry of Health in Declared Disaster Areas in the Western Division and the exact timeline for the full restoration of public utilities is on schedule.”

The National Weather Office has also advised of the continuous heavy downpour and the possibility of flooding in low lying areas as a result of an active trough of low pressure slowly moving to the west of the group.

As of this morning (12/02) only one evacuation centre is open (Girmit centres) from Lautoka.

“Since the health department had given the clearance for the six government pool quarters located below the post office was fit for human habitation, therefore the Nadi Police Community evacuation centre has now been closed.

“All evacuation centres in Nadi is closed.”
