The Public Service Commission achieved a milestone as its first batch of 12 former teachers headed to the Marshall Island after receiving their airline tickets yesterday.
Minister for Labour and Employment Relations, Mr Jone Usamate said that this new development would provide opportunities for those that have retired from the civil service to share their experience and expertise to those from around the region.
The Minister, together with Fiji’s roving ambassador to the Pacific islands, Mrs Litia Mawi, was on hand to impart some words of encouragement to the retirees who are the first lot of people under the PSC administered Fiji Volunteer Service scheme.
A former teacher himself, Mr Usamate said that while these teachers were going to be Fiji’s ambassadors to the Marshalls, they will also have an impact on the lives of the children there and that itself was a reward.
Minister Usamate congratulated the PSC and the teachers for working with each other to see this venture through.
“I also want to thank you, the volunteers for giving up your time, which you would have otherwise spent with your children, grandchildren and your community,” Mr Usamate said.
