01/08/2019

The first group of Fijian meat workers will be leaving our shores for employment opportunities in Australia under the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) next week.

These workers were recruited by Regional Workforce Management, Australia to work in a number of Meatwork facilities for a contract period of three (3) years.

The first group of four (4) workers will depart on 07 August for Rockhampton in Central Queensland while the second group of ten (10) will depart on 14 August to Wagga Wagga in New South Wales.

The Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Mr. Osea Cawaru while closing the three (3) days Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) training programme yesterday (31/07/19) congratulated the group for their new employment opportunities in Australia.

The closing of the PDO was also attended by the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency, John Feakes

Mr. Cawaru emphasized that their selection makes them Fiji’s ambassadors and the key to opening more doors for their fellow Fijians are in their hands.

“I encourage you to support each other as team mates and a family while in Australia and make this opportunity a success for you, your family and those who will follow.”

“The employer has placed confidence in you and your abilities, so please do not let them down.  This is your opportunity to impress and gain their trust and build a strong working relationship,” highlighted the Employment Permanent Secretary.

PS Cawaru encouraged the workers to make Fiji proud and be productive workers, dedicated and diligent with the right attitude, values and work ethics as this will create a positive image of Fiji and boost its reputation as we continuously search for more employment opportunities for our fellow Fijians under the PLS.

He urged the group to maintain their focus to work smart, learn as much as they can and save money for their families here in Fiji.

“Goals of self-development and the development of your families and communities must remain paramount,” he further stated.

The Employment Permanent Secretary sincerely thanked the employer, Regional Workforce Management for having the confidence to recruit from Fiji and also the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency, John Feakes and his team, on behalf of the Australian Government, for strengthening ties with the Fijian Government in providing access to employment and skills development opportunities under the Scheme.

Another thirty (30) selected Fijian meat workers will undergo Pre-Departure Orientation training programme on 18 August, 2019 before departing at the end of the month for Australia.
