"In order for Fiji to thrive and prosper, it is imperative that we lead with humility and sincerity," emphasized the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Honorable Ifereimi Vasu, during the opening of the Naitasiri Provincial Council (PCM) today at Lutu Village in the Muaira district.
He further highlighted that the primary role of the government is to serve the people and highlighted the crucial importance of establishing a strong foundation based on meeting the needs of the citizens.
Reflecting on his presence at the PCM, Minister Vasu expressed gratitude for the change in dates that allowed him to attend, despite the initial scheduling conflict with Vanuatu. He acknowledged Lutu Village's esteemed reputation for producing exceptional leaders and commended the past leaders for their contributions and positive impact on the community.
Minister Vasu recognized Naitasiri as the second most populous province in Fiji, with its diverse population. He extended his sincere gratitude to all the residents of Naitasiri for their generosity and support, which have contributed to the prosperity of numerous families.
He also highlighted recent significant events that underscored the importance of cultural preservation. Minister Vasu mentioned the traditional ceremony performed by the Natoaika kindy last month, emphasizing that it underscored the significance of instilling cultural values in children from an early age.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the graduation of 20 young leaders from the province, known as the Sausauvou Programme within the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs leadership training framework. He reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to educating and preparing young chiefs for future leadership roles.
“I am informed that out of the 23 chiefly positions in the province, 16 have been filled.”
"I would like to reiterate that effective leadership plays a pivotal role in ensuring smooth development for our community."
The Minister also shared various Government programs as announced in the 2023-2024 Budget and explained how they were designed to enhance the Government’s revenue-generating capabilities, which would consequently benefit the people.
Taking a thought-provoking and introspective approach, the Minister encouraged council members to contemplate ways in which they can actively contribute to the betterment of the nation, rather than relying solely on what the Government can provide.
"The government's approach has shifted from providing handouts to reintroducing an assistance model based on a 1/3 - 2/3 ratio," stated the Minister. "The aim is to cultivate a sense of ownership and responsibility among recipients."
“The Government has also reintroduced the Village Improvement Scheme and the Rural and Outer Island Projects. These strategies align with the government’s objectives of fostering rural economic growth and raising the standard of living.”
The Provincial Council also learned about the Ministry’s commitment to completing the construction of four roads in the province that it is funding.
“We are optimistic about the timely completion of these construction projects, and we envision that the 11 villages set to benefit from these new roads will soon begin to experience economic advantages.”
In conclusion, Minister Vasu reiterated the government's unwavering dedication to serving the people and the immense significance of preserving and nurturing Fiji's rich cultural heritage.
