Residents of Nabavatu in Dreketi will breathe a sigh of relief as foundation-laying works commence.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, officiated at the foundation-laying of the new relocated site in Nadoiviri, Dreketi, for the residence of Nabavatu.
Minister Ditoka said that the launching of the standard operating procedures for planned relocation in early 2023 will assist in guiding the relocation efforts of responsible implementing agencies, including community members that oversee such projects.
He adds that the new standing operating procedure paves the way for the usage of funding under the climate relocation of communities’ trust fund under the ministry of climate change and environment.
“This trust fund is a testament to our dedication to sustainable and resilient development. It has been established to provide the necessary resources for safeguarding the livelihoods of communities facing the imminent threat of displacement due to climate change. Nabavatu is just the beginning, a herald of hope for other vulnerable communities across our islands," said Minister Ditoka.
