29/10/2022

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) will construct a $1.5 billion free-way from Suva to Nadi, beginning in 2025, while the $100 million Nadi to Lautoka bypass will start in 2024.

As part of the announcement of the two major capital projects for FRA, Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, explained that they want to build roads with climate-resilient standards.

The A-G highlighted that funding for this project would come from budget support, and they have already discussed the matter with some development partners who are very interested in providing assistance in terms of financing, whether through a grant or concessional loan.

Furthermore, the A-G stated the Suva-Nadi freeway and the Nadi-Lautoka bypass will create more jobs and improve economic prospects for Fijians in these areas, as well as reduce traffic on existing roads.

FRA chief executive officer Kamal Prasad highlighted they are already in the design stages for the Nadi to Lautoka bypass.

Mr Prasad said that the Suva to Nadi freeway will be completed in about 6 years while the Nadi to Lautoka bypass will take 3 years to complete.
