The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) says the volume of stand over cane is being established before an decision is made on a request for the compensation of stand over cane.
This follows a submission by the Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) to the FSC and Sugar Ministry.
FSC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Abdul Khan said no farmers have been compensated at this stage, however, considerations have been given to farmers affected.
“No decision has been made but due consideration is being given” Mr Khan said.
“We are presently establishing the quantum of standover cane and once this is done, we will then consider any form of payment,” he said.
“We will talk to all the stakeholders before making the final decision,” he added.
SCGC CEO Mr Sundresh Chetty says there is a need for farmers to be compensated to sustain their livelihoods.
“We need to compensate them so that they can maintain their livelihood until the beginning of next season crush and we are optimistic that FSC and the Sugar ministry will look into and provide some assistance to the farmers,” Mr Chetty said.
According to SCGC, the estimated standover cane last year was 50, 000 tons.
