Discussions about the ongoing and future security cooperation under the robust framework of the Vuvale Partnership, emphasising the strengthened ties between Fiji and Australia were held today.
This was during a bilateral meeting between the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Hon. Pio Tikoduadua and Australia's Minister for International Development, Pacific and Defence Industry Hon. Pat Conroy.
Minister Tikoduadua highlighted that the collaboration between Fiji and Australia since the signing of the Vuvale Partnership has significantly strengthened bonds.
"This is evident in our joint projects which enhance our capabilities and demonstrate our mutual commitment to regional peace and security."
Key highlights from the partnership include the anticipated completion of the Fiji Maritime Essential Services Centre in Lami by 2024 and the achievements marked by the redevelopment of the Blackrock Peacekeeping and HADR Camp.
Discussions also centered around the upgrades at the RFNS Stanley Brown and the signing of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) which has notably enhanced the defense cooperation framework, facilitating vital personnel exchanges and capacity development.
The Minister further acknowledged Australia's pivotal role in enhancing Fiji’s maritime surveillance capabilities through the Pacific Maritime Security Program and the ongoing support provided by the C27 air mobility detachment.
"These initiatives have bolstered Fiji’s efforts in peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response."
"Our discussions today underscore a shared vision for a secure and prosperous future for our region. I am confident that through our collaborative efforts, Fiji and Australia will continue to build on the strong foundation we have established," concluded Minister Tikoduadua.
The bilateral meeting not only reflects the dynamic and evolving nature of the Fiji-Australia relationship but also sets a forward-looking agenda for deepening security and defense ties in the coming years.
