Public Service Commission permanent secretary Parmesh Chand signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with his Excellency, Jarden Kepas, and the High Commissioner of the Republic of Nauru today to implement the recruitment of senior volunteers under the Fiji Volunteer Scheme (FVS) to teach in Nauru.
The signing was held at the PSC office in Berkeley Crescent.
Mr Chand said the signing of the MOA was another significant milestone for the FVS because a similar agreement was signed with the Government of the Republic of Marshall Islands.
“The regional component of the FVS in terms of Senior Volunteers is taking another step today. This is in line with the Fijian government’s objective to work closely with our neighbours in the Pacific Region,” he said.
“The Fijian Government is grateful to the Republic of Nauru for identifying their human resource needs in the Education Sector and its intentions to recruit retired teachers from Fiji.
“Your Excellency, we have noted your government’s need in the education sector, and I am pleased that we are able to assist your Government through the Fiji Volunteer Service.
“Today’s signing of the agreement signifies that our retired teachers are very much marketable in the region and they are willing to impart their expertise in the administration and management of educational principles and practices with our pacific Island neighbours.”
Republic of Nauru High Commissioner stated before the signing; “Nauru is lacking qualified teachers, mainly because in the past the emphasis was on phosphate and education was not priority. But now phosphate has come to end and we have found that education is the future“.
“We are thankful to the Government of Fiji for the agreement to include Nauru in the scheme,” Mr Kepas said.
The FVS will be shortly publicizing an expression of interest to interested applicants. In order for one to be considered for engagement with the FVS, applicants need to first register their details with the National Employment Centre.
