The Public Service Commission in collaboration with key Government agencies is coordinating the Fiji Civil Service Excellence Awards Program for 2009. This involves a Civil Service Sports Day, the Civil Service Public Week for a public exhibition of Government services which will all culminate in the Civil Service Awards night on the 27th of November, 2009.
The Theme for this year is “Striving for Service Excellence Through Changes and Reforms”.
Mr Parmesh Chand, Permanent Secretary for Public Service informed that such a theme is timely and appropriate given the change and reform agenda pursued by Government.
The Civil Service Sports Day will be held on the 21st of November, 2009 at the Suva Grammar School grounds. The event will be organized by the Department of Youth & Sports through the Ministry of Education, National Heritage, Culture & Arts, Youth and Sports.
The Civil Service Public Week will be held in the three main Centers – Suva, Lautoka and Labasa from 24th – 26th November, 2009.
The week will begin with civil servants marching through the Town and Cities. During the 3-day event Ministries/Departments are expected to prepare information displays of services and products provided by their agencies.
In particular, they will be showcasing some of the positive reforms and developments that have taken place as a result of their services. The Ministry of Information will be the coordinating agency for the Civil Service Week exhibition.
The Civil Service Awards Night will take place at the Vodafone Arena on the 27th of November, 2009. Awards that will be given on the night include i) Commitment Award; ii) Achievement Award; iii) Fiji Public Service Excellence Prize and iv) Energy Award.
The Prime Minister of Fiji, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will be the Chief Guest. Guest Speaker is Professor Akira Nakamura, a re-knowned academic from Japan.
Professor Nakamura is the Professor of Political Science and Economics in the Graduate School of Governance Studies at Meji University, Tokyo, Japan. During the week he will make presentations to Senior Civil Servants on "New Public Management taking into account the concept of Good-enough governance."
