The Fiji Police Force today signed an agreement to assist the Vanuatu Police Force in certain areas of its operations which will see a closer working relationship.
The signing was between the Fiji Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Iowane Naivalurua, the acting Vanuatu Police Commissioner, Colonel Job Esau and the Fijian Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emosi Rakai.
This follows bilateral talks carried out by both countries during the 18th MSG Leaders summit this week.
Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said that it was a blessing for both countries to sign such a bilateral agreement.
“Its a wonderful occasion for both of us to be able to meet today and to work out plans on the establishment of the formation of working groups so that we have an idea of where things will move to from here,” he said.
In response Colonel Esau said today’s signing was a historical one for both Pacific islands and also a first for the Melanesian group of islands.
“We need to share resources, and I believe that Vanuatu and Fiji have the ability to come together and work as peacemakers in their own counties,” he said.
“Working together in the same culture, same environment and same spirit will enable us to achieve a successful implementation of our plan.
Commending the signing, Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the Fiji Police Force was pleased to assist Vanuatu.
“Some areas that the two Police Forces have identified include areas such as Community Policing and the development of human resources,” he said.
“The Vanuatu Police Force is very interested in the Community Policing concept that Fiji has.”
Inspector Sokomuri said the Vanuatu Police Force was quite impressed with presentations by the Fiji Police Force during the Melanesian Spearhead Group Police Commissioners meeting.
