The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Civil Aviation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola today approved a request by the Embassy of the United States of America in Suva to establish two US Agency for International Development (USAID) positions at the Embassy.
These appointments signals the re-establishment of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Office here in Suva after a lapse of fifteen (15) years.
The two (2) USAID positions comprise a Mission Director and a Program Officer will be filled next month.
“They will be tasked with duties that include overseeing all USAID programs in the Pacific, including working with bilateral projects and existing regional organizations and Missions to fund Global Climate Change Programs; Overseeing HIV/AIDS programs in PNG and disaster management programs in Micronesia and the Marshall Islands,” Ratu Kubuabola said.
The Ministry is appreciative of the re-establishment of the USAID Office in Suva in view of the benefits that will accrue to Fiji and the rest of the Pacific Island Countries in terms of access to development assistance in such areas as Climate Change, HIV/AIDS, and disaster management.
