Fiji calls for more action

Fiji has called on world leaders to take more stronger action against cluster munitions.

The call was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola during the first ever meeting of State Parties at the Cluster Munitions Convention underway in Laos.

“Citizens of Fiji participate in UN Peacekeeping efforts around the world and are therefore susceptible to the danger of cluster munitions,” he said.

“Cluster munitions kill indiscriminately and cause unacceptable harm to
women, boys and girls during and long after conflicts,” he said.

Ratu Inoke said they (cluster munitions) constitute a serious threat to peace, human security and development.

“Fiji has become party to the convention to show solidarity in the noble
cause it advocates. For we believe, the safe and cluster munitions free life we enjoy back in our small island state must also be enjoyed by a farmer, a school girl and a mother in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Serbia and elsewhere,” he said.
