Fiji is committed to the 2009 International Labour Organisation Jobs Pact endorsed by members in a Geneva Conference in 2009.

Permanent Secretary Labour Mr Taito Waqa said as a result of Fiji’s commitment to the Jobs Pact, the new employment and social protection policies were promulgated.

“This promulgation was aimed at achieving economic growth and to accelerate our recovery from the global economic crisis,”Mr Waqa said.

After the new employment and social protection policies were promulgated, they were gazetted as Fiji’s first National Employment Centre law, the NEC 2009 Decree and the launch of the National Employment Centre on June 4, 2010.

“The NEC now provides employment services, which covers formal employment, self employment, Fiji volunteer services and overseas employment services,”he said.

“The NEC aims to reduce unemployment in Fiji from 8.6 per cent (2007) to 4.2 per cent by 2012.

“The National Employment Centre targets to process 2000 unemployed clients this year (2011),” Mr Waqa said.

Government allocated $1million in this year’s national Budget.
