Fiji keen on achieving National Security Goals

Government is drafting a National Security Strategy, which outlines its major national security concerns and how it plans to deal with them.

Defence, National Security and Immigration permanent secretary, Mr Jale Fotofili said the fight against terrorism was now a global effort.

“Fiji is part of the regional and global community, and we can no longer say that we are safe from terrorists reach,” he said.

“Technology, education, media, travel, and commerce to name a few, are doorways in which the influence of terror makers reach our door steps, our homes through the Internet and so forth.

“Fiji will show its commitment to regional and global peace by adaptation of this measure on counter terrorism.”

The strategy document will outline in detail government’s national security goals and interests.

That is to preserve Fiji's independence and sovereignty, territorial integrity, constitutional order and public safety and the fulfillment of regional and international requirements.

The document wishes to express the interest of the people and the State based on values assumed and pursued by various communities by which it ensures prosperity, protection and safety of its people and the stability, existence and functioning of the State.

Mr Fotofili said the strategy asserted and wishes to achieve and safeguard several aspects such as the guaranteeing and maintenance of Fiji’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

“It also wishes to forge the development and preservation of democracy, welfare, security and safety of Fiji’s citizens, ensure sustainable socio-economic, environmental and cultural development of  society,” he said.

“This at the same time will maintain human security and stability in the society while meeting regional and international commitments.”

Government through the Ministry of Defence, National Security and Immigration has prepared a comprehensive implementation plan to be adopted across Government, the CSO’s, the municipals, the divisions, and district.

Mr Fotofili said the plan contained key national security goals and interest together with ways of addressing them in stages.

“These stages are divided according to immediate, to long-term national security objectives of Government,” he said.
