Fiji plays an important role in the South Pacific region in terms of rectifying and adopting the necessary measures on the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Head of the Support Branch for the Organisation on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Mark Alboun, made these remarks at the National Chemical Weapons Seminar currently underway in Nadi.

He said it is important that Fiji plays  its part, in properly implementing the measures on the convention in the region.

“ The chemical weapon convention has four essential pillars - disarment, non-preferential pillar, assistance protection pillar and international cooperation.

“ Fiji is the major crossroad in this region,” he said.

The seminar was attended by the various stakeholders dealing with chemicals in the country and is expected to formulate and implement legislations, policy initiatives, programmes and projects on matters pertaining to national security and public order.

Pillar 11 of the People’s Charter for Change, Peace and Progress requires Fiji to enhance global interaction and international relations.

Towards this end the Ministry of Defense, National Security and Immigration is committed to adhering and complying with various UN and International Conventions.
