Fiji continues to play a key role in advancing the interests of Pacific Small Islands Developing States (PSIDS).
At a recent meeting in Nadi, Pacific SIDS expressed their support to French Polynesia (Tahiti Nui) for decolonization.
Fiji continued to make sure that it plays the pivotal role in gaining international support for the Polynesian nation.
At the meeting of Foreign Ministers on the 50th birthday of the Non – Aligned Movement, Fiji Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabloa reiterated the call by the Pacific SIDS pertaining to Tahiti Nui.
“We believe that such action and support at the international level is in line with the fundamental principles of national independence and sovereignty that are also the basis for the NAM,” Ratu Inoke told the meeting.
“Leaders of Fiji and a number of Pacific Small Island Developing States at a summit meeting last week have expressed support for the re-inscription of Tahiti Nui on the United Nations’ decolonization committee list.”
Ratu Inoke added that PSIDS leaders agreed to this as a first step in Tahiti Nui’s quest for self-determination, recognizing that sustainable economic development and domestic reform will need to accompany action at the international level.
In this context of supporting the efforts of the international community, Fiji serves the international community as best as it can through participation in a number of peace-keeping operations in areas of conflict.
“This is perhaps all we can do in countries far afield,” Ratu Inoke said.
